Des<br \/>escaliers tortueux se d\u00e9ploieront sur les murs alors que philodendrons, aralias, caoutchoucs et<br \/>monsteras arboreront ses cimaises. Quelques personnages, endormis ou penseurs, se<br \/>distingueront, isol\u00e9s parmi les \u0153uvres. L\u2019int\u00e9r\u00eat de Marc Boumendil, fondateur de la Galerie Dil, pour le travail de l\u2019artiste<br \/>remonte \u00e0 sa m\u00e8re. Son enfance est marqu\u00e9e par la guerre. Son p\u00e8re et une grande partie de sa famille sont<br \/>d\u00e9cim\u00e9s dans les camps nazis. Lui, \u00e2g\u00e9 de sept ans, \u00e9chappe \u00e0 la rafle du Vel d\u2019Hiv. Cach\u00e9 chez<br \/>des paysans dans le Loiret puis dans une famille de r\u00e9publicains espagnols en Aveyron, il est<br \/>bri\u00e8vement emprisonn\u00e9 \u00e0 Drancy, avant d\u2019\u00eatre lib\u00e9r\u00e9 par les Am\u00e9ricains. Pupille de la nation,<br \/>l\u2019enfant est envoy\u00e9 \u00e0 la Croix-Rouge de Winterthur en Suisse.<\/p><p>En 1947, il part avec sa m\u00e8re et sa s\u0153ur \u00e0 Melbourne, en Australie, chez un oncle un peu fou<br \/>qui le maltraite en le suspendant notamment au-dessus de l\u2019escalier. L\u2019origine d\u2019une peur qu\u2019il<br \/>cherchera ind\u00e9finiment \u00e0 ma\u00eetriser dans ses \u0153uvres ?<\/p><p>De retour dans la capitale fran\u00e7aise en 1951, il suit les cours de dessin de la Ville de Paris, menant<br \/>une vie de boh\u00e8me particuli\u00e8re rude. C\u2019est \u00e0 l\u2019Acad\u00e9mie de la Grande Chaumi\u00e8re et dans l\u2019atelier<br \/>d\u2019Henri Goetz qu\u2019il fait la connaissance de Jacques Delahaye, Nicolas de Sta\u00ebl, Jean-Paul<br \/>Riopelle, Yves Klein, ou encore Jean Tinguely.<\/p><p>Les d\u00e9buts de Sam Szafran sont influenc\u00e9s par l\u2019art abstrait de Dubuffet et Hanta\u00ef, ainsi que les<br \/>collages de Kurt Schwitters. Il faudra attendre les ann\u00e9es 1960 pour voir \u00e9merger les \u0153uvres<br \/>figuratives qui le caract\u00e9risent. La pratique du pastel \u00e9galement.
